AI implementation projects often surface long-standing operational issues within organizations: steps maintained out of habit, unnecessary workarounds, and patched-up business processes. Similar experiences were previously brought by ERP, workflow, and RPA implementations as well. However, AI expands business process redesign (BPR) with new perspectives.
Which task is whose job?
AI is increasingly appearing in tasks that require interpretation, deliberation, or decision preparation. Therefore, when introducing it, it is worth reviewing the entire process and the areas of responsibility as well.
Are all existing steps really necessary? Which task should be performed by a human, a traditional system, or an AI agent? Where are pre-defined, clear-cut rules needed, and where can deliberation be allowed? At which points is human oversight essential?
These questions go beyond integrating a new tool. They provide an opportunity for the organization to align its operations with today's needs.
AI can also help in the redesign
The technology can also support mapping, analyzing, and redesigning processes. Thus, AI can play a role in developing the operating environment necessary for its own successful implementation.
The importance of process organization expertise further increases as a result: the business-justified steps must be selected from the possible solutions, responsibilities must be clarified, and the placement of human control must be defined.
In her LinkedIn post, our colleague Noémi Tihanyi explores in more detail why AI can give fresh momentum to rethinking processes.
